Top Ten Tuesday: Books I've Read Out of My Comfort Zone

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week I am listing some books I read out of my comfort zone, and loved anyway.  I have a pretty wide comfort zone, so this wasn't an easy feat.

1.  The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

Not only was I forced to read this for a school project, I have never been a huge fan of nonfiction historical novels.  So it was a rare chance that I actually ended up enjoying this one.

2.  All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Okay, so historical anything isn't typically my M.O.  But lately, I have been wanting to read more of them, and that is largely due to this beautiful book.

3.  The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

A classic that is realistic fiction?  This definitely isn't in my comfort zone, yet I recently read and really like this one.

4.  Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman

Trigger Warning was the first collection of short stories I had ever read, and I wasn't sure how I would like it, but it turns out I really do enjoy short stories.

5.  Landline by Rainbow Rowell

For one, this is adult fiction, and a contemporary/romance book at that.  Honestly, I probably only enjoyed it as much as I did because Rainbow Rowell wrote it.

  1. I don't read adult fiction like...ever. BUT I WANT TO READ SOME OF THESE. I actually have All the Light We Cannot See out from the library, but it was huge and I got scared and now it has to go back unread. *weeps* I'll read it eventually though...just when I'm in a better mood to tackle gargantuan adult historical fiction. *flails and collapses* And I want to read Lifeline because: Rainbow Rowell. No other reason needed. XD

    1. I have a lot more this year, but emphasis on THIS YEAR. AND YOU SHOULD READ THESE. ESPECIALLY ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE. It's intimidating, but so worth it. And Lifeline is so funny. Thanks for commenting, Cait! ❤

    1. I don't often, but when they really call to me, I do and I usually do end up loving them. All the Light We Cannot See especially. Thanks for commenting, Anna! ❤

  4. I recently read The Great Gatsby, too, and ended up really enjoying it - though I really wish I hadn't watched the movie before picking up the book, because there were just not many new things in the novel to discover this way. Can't wait to read Landline and All the Light We Cannot See, so I'm glad you enjoyed them.
    Wonderful list! <3

    1. I definitely enjoyed The Great Gatsby more than I though I would! I see now why it is considered the Great American novel and all that. I watched the movie first, too, but ages ago and I didn't remember it at all! And All the Light We Cannot See is a beautifully written book. Thanks so much for commenting! ❤

  5. I actually have Landline and The Great Gatsby sitting on my shelf but why haven't I read them yet?! I will. SOON. But omg this list has reminded me how much I want to read All the Light We Cannot See, because it sounds like something I would really love! I actually used to read loads of historical fiction until about a year ago! ♥

    1. READ THEM. Especially The Great Gatsby. That is a must read. But before ANYTHING ELSE, All the Light We Cannot See. I cannot stop thinking about that one. Thanks for commenting, Rebekah! ❤

  6. I'v been thinking of reading All The Light We Cannot See and Landline for some time. The only thing that's holding me back with Landline is because it's Adult fiction, which is a big deal for me because I mostly read YA. I just think I'd end up not liking it since it's not the kind of genre I typically read. >.< (Although I did love Rainbow Rowell's other YA books - namely Eleanor and Park, Fangirl and Carry On.)

As for ATLWCS, I've been reading lots of reviews about it lately, and I really do think it's a good book! I'll see if I can find time to read it sometime soon. ;)

    Great post, Erin!

    1. DROP EVERYTHING AND READ ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE. I keep pushing it on people, because it is SO worth it. I mostly read YA until this past year, and I felt a bit stuck in it. Adult books aren't scary, I swear! Thanks so much for commenting, Mara! ❤
