Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish, and since Valentine's Day is just around the corner, I'm listing ten books that have no romance (or very little).
1. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
This book has just about everything except for romance. Thieves, dimensions, magic, murder... Yep, everything.
2. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
I bet you're all tired of me promoting Neil Gaiman by now. But I wouldn't have to if he didn't write such damn great books.
3. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
I demand that everyone read this book. Every single person. Absolutely demand it.
4. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
Okay, I may be cheating a little bit on this one, but not really... You'll see if you read the book (and you should).
5. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Rife with murder and mystery, not so much hugs and kisses.
6. Vicious by V.E. Schwab
I have one word for this book: REVENGE. That is all. Oh, wait, and superpowers. That, too.
7. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
You might cry, but not over the gooey lovey romantic scenes (of which there are none).
9. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
If you enjoy politics in your high fantasy, then this novel was written for you. If you like an epic love story like traditional fairy tales, you're out of luck.
OMG I LOVE THIS LIST SO MUCH. *hugs everything on it* Also Vicious. <333 Vicious was SO FANTASTIC I CANNOT EVEN. Ahem. Which reminds me to read ADSOM...aaaand guess who has All The Light We Cannot See out from the library?!? *happy dances* ;D
ReplyDeleteI'M GLAD YOU LOVE IT. Vicious especially. I want to go back and read it for the first time all over again. AND READ ADSOM, CAIT. WHY ARE YOU WAITING. At least you finally have All the Light We Cannot See, which is truly brilliant. Thanks for commenting! ❤
DeleteThe Alchemyst! Yes! 6 books and no romance is the best! I know The Book Thief isn't very romance-y but I cried at the end because, well, all the deaths :( Great list!
ReplyDeleteI loved that series in middle school ❤ And, don't worry, I cried at the end of The Book Thief, too, and I never cry. Thanks for commenting, Tasya!
DeleteReally unique topic, Erin!
ReplyDeleteI actually didn't realise there was no romance in ADSOM...it was so engrossing, I JUST FORGOT ABOUT IT xD
And I loved reading the Alchemyst and its sequels...I ALSO DIDNT REALISE ROMANCE WASNT THERE >.<
I guess if a book is good enough, you won't notice when there's no romance, right? :)
Thanks, Geraldine! And I think you didn't notice the lack of romance because the book itself was not lacking without it. The same goes for The Alchemyst series, which I should reread someday. Thanks for commenting! ❤
DeleteOkay I absolutely ADORE high fantasy with politics, so The Queen of the Tearling might be going on my TBR pile.
ReplyDeleteYOU SHOULD NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR PROMOTING NEIL GAIMAN DARLING HE IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.

The Queen of the Tearling certainly isn't perfect. It's slow but shows a lot of potential. I think you would enjoy it! AND YES, ISN'T NEIL GAIMAN JUST THE BEST? Thanks for commenting, Ellie! ❤
DeleteI want to read The Queen of the Tearling so bad! And omg We Were Liars killed me....
ReplyDeleteThe Queen of the Tearling shows a lot of promise, and We Were Liars...I have no words. Thanks for commenting! ❤
DeleteHahaha! Great topic for TTT, Erin. We Were Liars is a good choice. We Were Liars was one of those books that left you like "what did I read". Anyway, I'm a little early but... Happy Valentines Day!
ReplyDeleteanna
Thanks, Anna! I love, love, LOVE We Were Liars. It is still my favorite contemporary. Happy Valentine's Day! ❤
