Top Ten Tuesday: 2016 Resolutions

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.  Since 2016 has just begun (and I can't believe it has), it is time to prepare a new list of resolutions!  I have never been one to actually commit to these things, but it is a good tool to set goals for the year.

1.  Sufficiently learn chess

My dad lettered in chess when he was in high school (centuries ago).  He has recently begun teaching me how to play with the new chess board my mom ❤ got him for Christmas.  I have no foolish hope of mastering it, but being capable of surviving a game without my brain imploding seems achievable.

2.  Survive another year of high school

Now, my school certainly has a higher survival rate than Sunnydale High, but there is no doubt that it is brutal.  Wish me luck.

3.  Read all the books

Okay, okay...so maybe not all the books.  But the heart it there.

4.  Completely switch over to cruelty free products

Last year I started to transition to using makeup exclusively from cruelty-free brands.  There aren't as many as I had thought, which can be disheartening, but I am hopeful of making a complete switch in 2016.

5.  Create more art

It isn't a secret that I like all forms of art: writing, drawing, music, dance, etc.  I simply want to dedicate more time to enjoying these things.

6.  Better time-management

I'm a procrastinator.  I rather watch Netflix until 3 in the morning than do my homework.  I need to work on my planning, my motivation--all that jazz.

7.  Learn how to cook something other than cereal

I bake some delicious cupcakes, cookies, and brownies.  I can hit buttons on a microwave.  But I have no clue about actual cooking.  I figure I should probably start learning how before I'm suddenly an adult with a kitchen and helpless to use it.

8.  Volunteer

(Look!  A sheep)

Not only does it look good on college applications, I think volunteering might actually be fun.  It's definitely a productive use of my time.  My local library had a program, so I think I will start there.

9.  Learn how to code

As with chess, I have no expectations of becoming an expert on coding.  However, I do think it would be beneficial and cool to learn.

10.  Go go sleep at a reasonable hour

I am not a cat.  Therefore, I cannot survive on cat naps and should not insist on doing so.

  1. BETTER TIME MANAGEMENT IS WHAT I SAY TO MYSELF EVERY DAY. DOES IT HAPPEN? NOPE. But I still wish you the best of luck with it! When I see my friends succeed at organising their lives it just motivates me, so you never know! I would love to learn to code but it sounds like there are numbers involved and numbers stress me out! There should be more cruelty-free brands, simple as. Go to bed at a reasonable time? Hehe... or I could write this comment :-)
TELL ZEE SHEEP I SAY HELLO.

    1. SAME. It never, ever works, but we can hope, right? And coding looks like a confusing mess, which is why I'm hoping to join the coding club at school and find some books so I'm not wandering around lost XD And I definitely think there should be more cruelty-free everything. THEN maybe I could go to bed on time...or not. (And zee sheep says HELLO).

  2. Love your list! I love cooking and it can be really easy. Skinnytaste and Budget Bytes are great websites for easy good recipes. Also volunteering is such a great one. When the kids are in school in a couple of years I would love to volunteer more. Great list and good luck!!

  3. Keep persevering with chess! It took me a while, but I finally got it, and I sometimes even win (OMG) games :D
And yesss sleeping at a reasonable time...something I always tell myself I should do in the morning...and promptly forget by nighttime xD good luck with all these resolutions- they sound like theyd be tricky for me!

    1. It makes my brain feel like it is melting XD But I am determined. Although I don't think getting to sleep at a normal time is going to work out... Thanks for commenting and happy new year! ❤

  4. All of these goals are great! I'd love to learn to code someday (maybe I'll take a class in college), and chess seems like a solid skill too. I 300% do not understand that game, so major props to you for learning. Happy 2016!

    1. Thanks, Emily! Coding seems like such a challenge, but I'm really excited. The same goes for chess, which IS really confusing. Thanks for commenting and happy New Year! ❤

  5. Volunteering is a blast if you find something you enjoy doing! Don't force yourself into something that feels like work. And yes, don't we all need more time management. Ugh one day...

    1. Thanks, Anna! Chess makes my brain hurt but is also super fun. I like the challenge. And I can't wait to volunteer at the library (and to be surrounded by all those books). Thanks for commenting! ❤

  7. This is such a great list, Erin (I'm not just saying that because of the Buffy GIF...). I wish you the best of luck and I'm sure you can achieve all of these, though going to bed at a reasonable hour sounds impossible. I've opted to spend the entire day walking around like a zombie instead. Learning to code sounds like such a good idea but I have NO idea where to start because it just looks so terrifying. Also, good luck with this year of school. I hope there aren't any Vampires/werewolves/demons lurking in the basement.

    1. But the Buffy GIF is awesome, right? XD Yeah, I am already failing at going to bed on time. Epically failing, to be exact. I should just resign myself to being nocturnal. I am going to join the coding club at school and hopefully learn from a teacher...there is no way I can teach myself. And I WISH there were demons lurking at my school. Maybe then I wouldn't have to take math tests due to vampires. Thanks for commenting, Emma! ❤

  8. I can relate to so many of these hahaha. I do actually really want to learn coding! It just seems so complicated that it's hard to find the motivation to start learning...

  9. These are all great resolutions, Erin! Chess is tough. I know how to play it and I can totally relate with feeling like my brain is going to implode during a game. Good luck with surviving another year of high school. I have to do the same. Since freshman year, high school has gotten exponentially more difficult and I find myself very sleep deprived all the time so yes, I want to try to get more sleep as well. Yay for cooking. I love cooking (mostly because I get to eat food at the end of the whole process) but I don't find the time to do it very often. Good luck with learning how to code. It's so confusing and most of the time I feel like I'm drowning in all the possibilities without actually knowing what I'm doing, but learning how to code is also very rewarding.

    1. Thank you, Ana! Chess seems impossible, but I also really like the challenge. The challenge of school, however, is a different matter. XD High school is not easy, especially when I am constantly so sleepy. And I definitely think the best part about cooking is the final product. That is why I enjoy baking--think of all the sugary sweetness! And coding will be hard to tackle, but also fascinating. Thanks so much for commenting! ❤
