Top Ten Tuesday: Books To Read If You Like The Mortal Instruments

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week you can read the title because I don't feel like repeating myself.  Honestly, I don't entirely trust posts like these!  To me, books are very individual, and just because you liked one doesn't guarantee you will like the other!  That is one reason that this is another short Top Ten Tuesday.  The other reason is lack of time.  School and life are both quite hectic right now and although I try my best, for the next two weeks or so my posting may be a bit off!

Holly Black and Cassandra Clare have very similar writing styles.  They have to, considering they did write a book together.  That isn't this book, but The Darkest Part of the Forest is certainly wonderful.  It has just the right amount of whimsy and horror.

Things The Mortal Instruments and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer have in common: angst, tension, and sarcasm sprinkled in among the horror.

Complex plots and characters are two factors this series and The Mortal Instruments share.  I do not recommend if you dislike cliff hangers, although you are probably used to them after having read Cassandra Clare's books.

Remarkable characters, remarkable quotes--yep, just like a Cassandra Clare book.  The world building is also something I would like to compare, since both are fantastic.  Really, I have just mentioned this series so many times that it has probably become redundant.

I don't know what it is exactly, but something about this book reminds me of The Mortal Instruments.  Or should I say that The Mortal Instruments reminds me of Cruel Beauty, which I read first?  I don't know--just go read this.

  1. I have never read Morta Instruments and I am not sure these are my main type of books but I will say the covers are all awesome :)

    1. It is certainly for those who like angsty books with demons and magic, but the covers are for everyone! XD Thanks for commenting!

  2. TMI and Mara Dyer definitely have the sarcasm on point. Noah reminded me of Jace a lot except he was more like a British cousin of Jace haha great recommendations!

    1. Don't they? If only I had that skill so down pat. Noah and Jace could be distant cousins, really! I loved them both. Thanks for commenting!

  3. Yes, how can you be sure you'll like every book just because it reminds you of another?! Crazy! All books should be appreciated as individuals with their own story to tell, no matter what they might be 'similar' to! But omg TMI is just the best. THE BEST. I adored TOG as well and The Raven Boys and Cruel Beauty sound amazing. I wish I could pull them out of the screen and read them now. I swear school is trying to bury us all alive under mountains of paper and assignments and projects and coursework and exams and... there's just too much to do. However, your list is brilliant and full of reading inspiration. I love it! :-)

    1. Right? I don't trust other books that much! I hate when people describe books as a blend of two others. They're all their own stories! TMI is awesome. Fantastic. When I finally got around to reading it, I loved it to death. TOG is wonderful, but I prefer The Raven Boys--which you need to read. And Cruel Beauty is similar to ACOTAR! If only school didn't get in the way so much. When will they realize that I have better things to do than math homework? XD Thanks for commenting, Rebekah!

  4. I really hope school doesn't get too busy for you, Erin. It just sucks sometimes, doesn't it? Anyway, this is a really great list. I've read three of these books (Cruel Beauty, ToG and TRB) and absolutely loved all three. I've wanted to read The Darkest Part of the Forest for absolutely ages. So many books, so little time. :P

I get what you mean about books being very individual. That's why I normally dislike it when publishers market books as X meets Y, normally because it's nothing like either of the two books (and because they're always compared to The Hunger Games. Seriously, there are more books out there!)

    1. School is terribly busy, but right now it is the LIFE part that is crazy! I'm actually going through a big change right now and it is just insane. There's hardly time for books anymore lately. But you should definitely read The Darkest Part of the Forest. I cannot recommend it more. If you can find the time! XD

I also dislike when books are described as a mix of popular series--usually only the well known ones. One book is never exactly like the other. It's either the "new Hunger Games" or the "next John Green." Thanks for commenting, Emma!

  5. I loved The Darkest Part of the Forest. It was my first Holly Black book. Cruel Beauty was alright, it started out too slow for me, but when it picked up, I liked it.

    1. The Darkest Part of the Forest was my first Holly Black book, too. Cruel Beauty does start off slow, but the ending was fantastic! Thanks for commenting!

  6. Yay for The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer! :D I'm currently in the beginning, but I can see the thrilling aspects of the novel! I'm so excited to get through with the story and find out what happens to Mara :D Great post Erin!
