Top Ten Tuesday: Last Ten Books That Came Into My Possession

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish, and the theme this week is to present all the wonderful, beautiful books that last came into my greedy hands.

1.  The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

(Bought at Barnes & Noble Booksellers)

I'm not going to lie, I bought this one because it is pretty.  I had been eyeing it for two months and was only just recently able to persuade myself into getting it.  In my house there is an overabundance of copes of Sherlock's stories, but none are as gorgeous as this.  It only has seven stories, but it's red leather, has silver gilt pages, and has a ribbon bookmark.  Oh, and it was only ten dollars.*

This edition also contains the original artwork by Sidney Paget, the ones that were published with the originals in the newspaper, The Strand.

*All of the classics published in these Barnes & Noble Collectible Editions are $10 (including The Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan), and I highly suggest checking them out.

2.  Landline by Rainbow Rowell

(Checked out from the eBook library)

Landline was my first adult Rainbow Rowell book!  I sped through this one in a night and thought it was entertaining and strangely relatable, since I do not happen to be a forty year old woman whose husband just (sort of) left her (although I could be a Cheeto loving dragon for all you know).  Rainbow Rowell has a talent for writing dialogue, and a book centered around time-and-space-defying phone conversations is certainly one to showcase that.

3.  Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

(Checked out from the library)

This book absolutely killed me.  You are all invited to my funeral.  There will be cake.  Heir of Fire is a roller coaster ride with screaming and blood and magic (I would not suggest an actual roller coaster ride with these things.  Only metaphorical ones).  I was warned by literally every single being in the universe and beyond that this would tear my heart out and make confetti of it.  Guess what?  It did.  I can't wait for the next one.

4.  1984 by George Orwell

(Checked out from the library)

At my high school, you read this book in English 4.  I'm only going into English 3 this semester.  I couldn't wait.  It turns out that Big Brother is not only a fun and potentially brain cell killing TV show, but a creepy, mustachioed dictator who watches your every move.  I am currently reading this one, and it is seriously disturbing.  Nothing in the society can be determined to be truth or a lie.  History is rewritten and people are erased from it altogether.  Just read it and witness the horror for yourself.  I have read a lot of dystopians before, but not one quite like this.

(Checked out from the library)

I mentioned this in my June Wrap Up, but I was not satisfied with this one.  It was a stale cupcake (those things are also very disappointing).  The writing is as expected when an eighth grader is the author, and even worse when all personality is edited out.  It has a good message, but simply didn't interest me.

6.  The Young Elites by Marie Lu

(Checked out from the eBook library)

Okay, think of the darkest thing you can imagine.  Dementors?  Sebastian Morgenstern?  Nope, this book is darker.  I may suggest running away screaming if you don't care for villainous protagonists and bitterness.  In all honesty, Adelina may just need a hug and some candy, okay?  Okay.

7.  Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

(Checked out from the library--thanks dad)

Neverwhere was my latest review (yay)!  Sadly, my second book I read by Neil Gaiman wasn't as good as the first.  Although, come on, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is hard to beat.  I mean, have you read that book?  It's a masterpiece.  Neil Gaiman must be some sort of magician, because his writing is pure magic.

8.  I Was Here by Gayle Forman

(Checked out from the eBook library)

I Was Here is a story about a friend's suicide, or rather the aftermath of it.  Even though the topic is handled well, I found the story to be missing some emotion.  Which is strange, since it is a book about death.  I wanted to cry.  I wanted a flood of tears that would cause Steve Carell to start building an ark and for Morgan Freeman to tell him he's God.  But there was no Steve Carell, no ark, and no Morgan Freeman.  It would have been better with them  (Though what isn't, really).

9.  A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

(A gift from my friend)

My very awesome friend gave this book to me for my birthday, and a million thanks go out to her, because this book is as awesome as she is.  I mean, it's written by Sarah J. Maas.  You can't go wrong with that.  Sarah J. Maas is awesome, too.  Everything is awesome!  But, clearly, I am the most awesome...right?

10.  Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

(To be checked out from the eBook library)

This is a warning to whoever has this currently checked out from the library:  if you do not return this soon so I can read it, I will tie you down and force you to watch all the Doctor's regenerations over and over again.  Or listen to Justin Bieber.  Whichever is more painful for you, because I have done my waiting!   Twelve years of it!  In Azkaban!

    1. I never expected to love Landline as much as I did! But I have to say that my favorite by Rainbow Rowell is probably Eleanor and Park. I hope your library gets an eBook copy of Since You've Been Gone soon! And OF COURSE I'll enjoy all the books! ;D

    1. Thanks! I'm reading 1984 right now and I really like the writing. I had heard George Orwell was a great writer, but hearing that and experiencing it are such different things! I'm in love with my new Sherlock book. I think I may possibly marry it.
