Top Ten Tuesday: Hyped Books I've Never Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish, and the theme this week is to list the top ten hyped books I have never read.  Oh my.

1.  A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Coming in at number one because it is the most horrific is this sure to be lovely book by the equally lovely Victoria Schwab.  Why on earth, or any other plant for that matter, have I not read this book?  It's V.E. Schwab!  It's magic and dimensional travel!  I cannot name one good reason why this book has yet to be devoured by moi.  Not one.  It's quite shameful, really.

2.  The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This was published in 1925.  I have had nearly a full century to read this book, but no.  I decided to watch every season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (not that anything could beat Buffy, mind you) and eat candy.  What am I doing with my ultimately short and unimportant life, hmm?  Certainly not the things I should be doing (although, seriously, Buffy was a good call).

3.  A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I know literally everyone and their goat has seen the show and read the books, but guess what?  I haven't, and neither has my mythical goat.  All I know is, if the books are anything like the show, there is a lot of nudity.  Personally, I don't enjoy, um, breasts being shoved in my face in between scenes of gore and death (which I actually enjoy in a non-sadistic, serial killer way).  But maybe one day I'll ignore that and read these.

4.  The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien

Despite the fact that this series has revolutionized fantasy books and all that, I haven't read it and currently have no plans to.  Why, you might ask?  Well, first off, I've seen all of the Lord of the Rings movies and the movie starring Sherlock and John Watson, so I know everything that is going to happen.  Thanks, dad.  Plus, there are no strong female leads, and I'm happiest reading about kick ass warrior princesses than short dudes with hairy feet.

5.  Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

This seems to be ones of those books people will either go to their graves to defend or avidly spew poison at.  I haven't had the opportunity as so far to do either, although I will admit that the cover is gorgeous and I kind of want to tattoo it on my face.  But, apparently, it's a love...square?  Three boys fall for the main character, and since I'm sick of triangles, I'm not so sure how I feel about a square... (sorry, shapes).

6.  Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins

I think I may be the only person in the world who hasn't read this book.  Seriously.  I swear, I'm going to, but it isn't exactly my #1 must read, you know?  It's about a southern belle in a southern town, and I am sick of southern towns.  I live in one and reading is supposed to be an escape, right?  Well, all I'd be doing is popping from one sickeningly southern town to another.  At least this one promises magic, though...  All my town does is offer the power to make you want to jump of a bridge.

7.  Mistborn: the Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Mistborn comes with all sorts of goodies I'm sure I'll adore, but its such a commitment, and I'm not so sure I'm ready for such a serious relationship.  I can be quite fickle, you know.  But, really, these books are long.  In the time it took to read this trilogy, I could read an entire library.

8.  Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Okay, okay, quiet your gasping.  It's on my Summer TBR!  I've been meaning to read this for ages!  Why haven't I, you ask?  Oh, yeah.  I'm a lazy potato, that's why.  Plus, the guy's name is Prince Po...  All I can see is a giant panda bear who know kung fu...

9.  The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Every time I go on the internet lately, it's The Wrath and the Dawn this and The Wrath and the Dawn that.  I got the message, but have yet to crack open this book.  It's a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, which I have never been the biggest fan of, but we'll see.

10.  Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Considering the fact that I was still in my Twilight phase when this book came out, I demand forgiveness.  If I had read it then, when I didn't know yet what the makings of an awesome book were, I would not have gotten it.  But now?  Definitely.  It's about angels and demons, two of my favorite subjects, and I plan on reading this one when I can carve out the time between sleeping and being a general zombie (although I promise not to eat out your brains).

  1. So I haven't read any of these either but I am in the middle of Red Queen audio and am kind of loving it. It could take a turn though who knows. I really want to read the Wrath and the Dawn and Rebel Belle. Great list!

    1. Red Queen sounds like an awesome book, but some people say it isn't original, but I am so glad you're liking itQ Maybe I need to pick it up, too. Thanks for commenting!

  2. I've actually read quite a few of these *pats self on back*

I literally just finished The Wrath and the Dawn and loved it. The writing is wonderful and it's probably one of the best books I've read this year. The Final Empire is one of my favourite books ever. It is long, but it's also ridiculously fast paced for an adult fantasy book and once you hit a certain point the pages just melt away. You won't regret reading it! To be honest I thought that both The Great Gatsby and The Hobbit were a little meh, but I think that's personal taste more than anything else. Game of Thrones was good, but it was so slow and I don't think I'll continue the series because of that. I did like A Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but yet again I didn't love it. I think that's just me though.

Is this a bad time to admit that I kind of hated Red Queen? So many people love that book but I just rolled my eyes all the way through. I think it was the hype that killed it for me, but if I were you I would definitely give it a go. I think it just wasn't for me.

ADSOM, Rebel Belle, and Graceling are all books I really want to read, ADSOM the most. Hopefully I'll get to it this summer. :)

    Great list!

    1. I need to catch up with you, then!

I've been thinking a LOT about reading the Mistborn trilogy lately. Everyone says they're AMAZING. I've heard mixed things about The Hobbit and The Great Gatsby. Both are said to be a bit boring. I actually read the first chapter or so of Game of Thrones, and the writing is good, but I'm not so sure about it for some reason. My heart is still set on A Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though!

Yeah, I'm super wary of hyped up books. and that is why I haven't read Red Queen yet. I think I will have to give it a shot, though.

I am DYING to read ADSOM! We both need to get on that, huh?

      Thanks for commenting!

  3. Rebel Belle is a really light, fun, easy read. (Though, maybe one for a day you don't feel really sick of Southern everything...)

    My TTT.
