Road Trip Reads

You may be wondering, "What is a road trip read?" The answer is simple: to me, it is a book that is exciting enough to capture and keep your attention, that is fun to read and not too dense or serious, and something that could inspire you on your own trip. So what books fit this description?

I love road trips. Sitting in a car for hours on end, listening to music, reading, and snacking on Sour Patch Kids. And in fact, as you read this, I am venturing off on my own road trip. If any of you are going on a trip, whether it is of the road variety or not, I suggest bringing along one of these books:

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Other than the fact that this series is amazing, it also involves inter-dimensional travel through magical worlds.  And with all the pirates, magic duels and tournaments, and thievery, you'll never be bored.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

To this day, I'm not sure if I entirely liked this book.  But I am very glad I read it. This one involves an actual road trip across the USA, and the weird and downright mad ideas will make your head spin for years afterward.

The Martian by Andy Weir

The Martian is simply hilarious. It's an action packed, exciting story about survival and exploring new places (AKA, Mars). Also, did I mention it's funny?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K Rowling

I will always recommend Harry Potter. But the reason it is on this list is because sometimes it is good to go back and visit an old favorite story. And for a lot of us, I know this series will be like a little bit of home to take with you.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

It's no secret by now that I love Agatha Christie. Murder on the Orient Express not only keeps you on the edge of your seat with anticipation with a mystery you won't be able to solve, but is set solely on a train traversing Europe. While that sounds like a grand time, you'll also be thankful you aren't travelling with a murderer...or are you?

  1. Such good ones!! I want to start the first series you have there. I LOVED The Martian. Can't go wrong with Harry Potter. I used to read Agatha Christie when I was younger. I need to get back to her books.

  2. This is a great selection, and there are some books that I would never have thought of as road trip books, but would definitely include in my list now, ha. I TOTALLY feel you on American Gods. I don't know why or whether I liked the book, but it's stuck with me for a long time, and I'm really glad I read it. Can't wait to binge the season! :) Great post.

  3. I love this post idea! Your definition of a road trip book is awesome <3 have fun on your trip!

HERE HERE! CHEERS FOR THE MARTIAN! That's the best book I've read this year, far and away.

Going by your definition, I'd recommend Phantom of Blood Alley by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier, and Resistance by Jaye L. Knight as good road trip reads!

    1. ADSOM as a whole series blew me away. I haven't read such a well done and well rounded series in a while. And I totally recommend American Gods and any Agatha Christie book, you will not be disappointed. Thanks for commenting!

  5. I would probably recommend Paper Towns by John Green, because it involves a hilarious road trip. Something else that I love is Vicious by V.E Schwab, which is amazing but I found myself able to easily detach from it/leave it unread for long periods of time. Another book is Sofia Khan is Not Obliged, which is a very funny and light book, perfect for a road trip. It also contains a fair dosage of inspiration, so there's that.xx

    1. Yeah, Paper Towns would be fun for this! And don't even get me started on Vicious, I love it so much, and I'm super excited for the sequel. I haven't heard of Not Obliged before, but I should look into it. Thanks for commenting!

  6. Eeep I would definitely take a Darker Shade of Magic on a roadtrip!! I also think good roadtrip books are probably ones that don't end too fast?!😂 Although I actually get motion-sick, so audiobooks are the go-to for me heheeh. I love your list! And I need to read more Gaiman...

    1. Aww, Cait, it sucks that you get motion sick! I don't know if I would be able to live with that. You definitely HAVE to read more Gaiman, Cait. He's such a brilliant author. Him and V.E. Schwab are two of my favorites. Thanks for commenting!

  7. I adore road trips, and books are an essential part of them. I always have to bring one or two (or five) books with me wherever I go. Thankfully I have yet to be the person in the driver's seat on a long road trip, but if that ever happened I don't know what I would do- Actually I would probably just listen to audio books.
This is a great post. :)

    1. I brought 6 books on my road trip last week! I have always loved road trips and I am grateful I don't have to drive yet, either. The more reading, the better. Thanks so much for commenting!
